Plano Public Library Announces Upcoming Adult and Youth Programs – Shaw Local

Summer Reading Program: From June 1 to July 30 for all ages. Adventure is just one book away. Stop by the information desk to sign up for the summer reading program and get a reading journal to take home. You will win a prize after six hours of reading or listening. Adult programs

Local Authors Fair: Saturday, July 30, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Support and celebrate local authors. Come and enjoy readings by authors and short conferences. More than 10 authors will present their work. You will also have the opportunity to meet and discuss with them. The books will be available for purchase. Refreshments served. Planned appearance: Carl Armstrong, Paul Block, Jeanne Valentine, Georgann Prochaska, Elizabeth Wheeler, CL Gibson, David E. Dean, Emily Assell, Rania Zeithar, Terry Weston, Matthew Jones, Kevin Densmore, LA Guettler and Bambi Harris.

On-the-go craft kits: Available Monday August 1st. Free craft kits for high school students and adults. August’s craft is a dot painted vase. Each kit includes a colorful milk jug, acrylic paints, painting instruments and instructions. Available on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last.

Technology Support Service: Saturday, July 23, 11 a.m. at 1 pm A free opportunity to meet technology expert Robert Mitilieri. It will answer questions about computers, cell phones, tablets or e-readers. Bring your device for the best experience. No registration required.

Card making class: Thursday, August 4, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jennifer Boring will teach you how to make five handmade cards using simple techniques and embellishments that will enhance your finished project. All supplies provided, including envelopes. Open to high school students, adults and students aged 10 and over accompanied by an adult. The $5 fee must be paid at the time of registration. Jewelery making class: Monday, August 8, 6-8 p.m. Deb Herzog will teach you how to make an on-trend goddess bracelet, made from a combination of pearl shell beads and marbled turquoise jasper. All supplies provided. Open to high school students and adults. The $10 fee must be paid at time of registration. Call 630-552-2030 to register.

Free movie: Wednesday, August 10, 6-8:10 p.m. Death on the Nile (2021), rated PG-13. Open to all ages. Complimentary refreshments served. No registration required.

Silent Book Club: Thursdays, 7 to 8 p.m. A book club like no other. Come to the Carnegie Quiet Reading Room in the library and make yourself comfortable in one of our comfy chairs. Read quietly with other book lovers in quiet camaraderie. Follow Plano’s Silent Book Club on Facebook. No registration required.

Knitting & Crochet Group: Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., via Zoom. This informal group works on their own projects, discusses yarn types and colors, and helps each other with new or tricky patterns. No registration required. Group of writers: Thursdays, July 28 and August 11, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in person or via Zoom. Join other writers to discuss your work. Open to adults and high school students. Youth programs

Hitting the Beach: Monday, July 25, 2 to 2:45 p.m. or 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Join us in our race to “clean up the beaches”. Afterward, unwind with homemade lemonade and some fun on the beach. For independent students entering Years 1-6. Registration required. Call 630-552-2025 to register. Note: This is an indoor program, and no sand will be involved.

Nocturnal animals: Wednesday, July 27, 2 to 2:45 p.m. or 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Which animals stay awake at night? Join us for poems, songs and books about nocturnal animals. There will be time for an optional craft during the last 15 minutes of the program. Bring a blanket for your family to sit on. For children from 0 to 5 years old, accompanied by an adult. Registration required.

Art off the beaten track: Tuesday, August 2, 2-3 p.m. or 6:30-7:30 p.m. Create your own works of art inspired by famous artists who have imagined new ways to create works of art. For independent students entering Years 4-9. Registration required. Call 630-552-2025 to register.

Sounds fun: Wednesday, August 3, 2-2:45 p.m. or 6:30-7:15 p.m. Explore letter sounds and handwriting readiness skills in a fun, interactive, and multi-sensory way. We will have a variety of phonic stations for you to explore at your own pace. We will focus on different letter sounds each month. Intended for children from 3 to 6 years old, accompanied by an adult. Registration is mandatory. Call 630-552-2025 to register.

Pizza & Pages (for children entering grades 6-9): Tuesday, August 9 or Thursday, August 11, from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., in person or via Zoom. Join us for our discussion of the Pizza & Pages book.
