Carlton Edward Overland, aged 79, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2021 at the Skaalen Nursing Home. He was born in Stoughton on February 28, 1942, son of Oscar and Lillian Overland.
Carlton graduated from Stoughton High School in 1960 and St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, in 1964. He received his MA in Art History from UW Madison in 1965.
On August 21, 1965, Carlton married Betty Urfer in Madison. He was Professor of Art History at the University of Northern Iowa from 1968 to 1970. Carlton was Curator of Prints and Drawings and Lecturer in the Department of Art History at UW Madison. He was twice Acting Director of the Elvehjem Art Museum (Chazen).
Carlton has traveled to Europe 17 times for Elvehjem research and exhibits, often accompanied by his family. He enjoyed traveling, reading, and golf. Carlton had a phenomenal knowledge of history and a dry sense of humor. He was the gentle man always consumed with great love for his family.
Carlton is survived by his wife Betty for 56 years; son, Nathan Overland; daughter, Rebecca “Becky” Overland; beloved grandson, Vincent Overland; sister-in-law, Kathy Overland; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents died before him; and his brother, the Reverend Clark Overland.
A memorial to celebrate his life will be planned later.
