Across the Spider-Verse will take miles to unimaginable places


Phil Lord and Christopher Miller draw parallels between the graphics of The Mitchells vs The Machines and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).

For Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the animation techniques behind Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse (Part 1) owe their success to the lessons learned in developing The Mitchells vs. the Machines‘characters.

Talk to IndieWire, Lord and Miller talked about The Mitchells vs. the Machines director Mike Rianda’s desire to avoid a “hyper-realistic” visual style in favor of something more unique, but also emblematic of the dysfunctional Mitchell family member. “It doesn’t need to have realistic students, the houses don’t have to look like exhibition halls, but cluttered and inhabited,” Miller said. “They could feel home-made and love the watercolor illustrations.” Miller also attributed the film’s success to the “handmade wobbly analog look” created by The Mitchell‘Production designer Lindsey Olivares, whom he described as “difficult for a computer to learn how to do”.

“Lindsey’s artwork emphasizes your imperfections, things about yourself that you want to cover up, like bigger ears,” Lord continued. “She celebrated the individuality of the characters instead of trying to get rid of these things. We have a movie where that choice was made over and over again, taking the little things that make people wonderful.”

The filmmaking duo then discussed how The Mitchell adapted some performances to an animated form, particularly Olivia Coleman as the evil AI PAL, and how the animation contrasted its setting with that of Katie Mitchell and her family. On how this approach influenced Through the Spider-Verse, Lord noted that “It was fun having the confidence to go even harder and push the midrange even further and take the miles. [Morales] in places you couldn’t imagine. “

Released on Netflix in April 2021, The Mitchells vs. the Machines received critical acclaim and quickly became the streaming service’s most-watched animated film of all time. The film follows aspiring young director Katie and her family – father Rick, mother Linda, daughter Katie, son Aaron and pug Monchi – as they make their way to Katie’s film school by decision of Rick. During the journey, however, an unintentional mechanical apocalypse caused by technology inventor Mark Bowman (Eric Andre) leads to the imprisonment of all humans except the Mitchell’s thanks to Rick’s aversive nature, forcing the family to become the unlikely saviors of Earth. Although it is not connected to the Spider-Verse movies, Rianda previously admitted that he almost inserted a “ruffled and bumpy Spider-Man” similar to Spider-Verse‘s Peter B. Parker in a plan, but this idea never saw the light of day.

Co-written and co-produced by Lord and Miller, Spider Man: Through the Spider-Verse (Part 1), a sequel to the Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, released its first trailer in December, which showed Miles Morales reuniting with Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman and engaging in multidimensional combat with Spider-Man 2099. As the title suggests, the story consists of two animated sequels simultaneously and will not only take Miles through a number of worlds, but give each world its own distinct artistic style. Besides Miles, Gwen and Peter B., Through the Spider-Verse will introduce new Spider characters like Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman, played by Unsafeit’s Issa Rae.

Spider Man: On the other side the Spider-Verse (Part One) hits theaters on October 7, 2022, featuring Part Of them released in 2023.
